Well…after the museum this morning, we found that there really isn’t anything else we want to do here in Florence so we took the afternoon off to just relax and recover…and I still feel like it’s my fault that I didn’t do the homework to keep us busy for our time here…I can’t expect my daughter to do everything and keep me amused but I guess I look at it like we are resting up for Rome and will be back at full speed tomorrow…I think she feels stressed out about having to plan it all when I like having time to do nothing after walking 25 miles here…so as of tonight, I am going to make sure I make decisions to match her…no anything you want or that bullshit that I do trying to make sure she does things she wants to do and not just me…but that hasn’t worked so far and I really don’t know how to fix it…maybe I’m reading into it something that isn’t there? Yeah, probably…but that’s been me my entire life so how can I change now? She just doesn’t look happy and I hate that…crap…

Well…damn, it’s a bitch getting old…and this trip has worn me out to the point that I’m looking forward to going home and we still have Rome to go…okay, no, I shouldn’t whine like that…it’s probably my last chance to spend time with my daughter when I am still capable of doing things…and I need to remember that…she has been a trouper and keeps us organized while I really don’t know enough about the places we’ve visited to be of much help with suggestions of what to see and do…and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t do the work it takes for a long trip like this…oh, well…I get to see Galileo this morning and it’s really cool that DaVinci, Galileo, and Michelangelo lived here at the same time…and Mark Twain lived here for years in the 1800’s…I look at the history of this part of the world and the US crowing abut 250 years when this place has been here for thousands gives some perspective on how young the US is…and has made another part of the world real to me like the UK trip did…I am going to enjoy this last week here…and I still have 250 euros in cash to spend by the end of the week since I am really trying to not have any left when we go home…it’s 9am here and I need to get ready to go…62 degrees and sunny so I need to sunscreen this old skin…

Well….up and moving at 6am this morning on our last day in Florence…going to the Galileo museum this morning and I am looking forward to that…my feet and legs were pretty puffy from all the walking we’ve been doing so I put my knee high compression socks on to try to get them to get a little back to normal and I think it worked some and I’m happy bout that…I still can’t believe all of the art we’ve seen on this trip and yesterday seeing the 17 foot tall statue of David done by Michelangelo was a highlight…and we saw an unfinished statue by him with the drill marks from cutting away the marble…pretty cool to see his work in progress…the power just went out in my room and a breaker tripped so I had to go down to the desk and and get them to reset it…might have been the induction kettle that I had on to heat water for the first cup of coffee for the morning…looking forward to another day with my daughter as we get into the final leg of the trip…even with eating a lot I still think I’ve lost weight with all the walking and that’s pretty cool…but I think it will take a week or so to get back to normal…if I can…after the trip…back in town in one week…more later…

Well…damn, I’m getting old…sore as heck and just exhausted and I think my daughter is feeling the same way since we did everything we wanted to do today and then bailed back here at a little after 2pm…and we are going to skip dinner and just get some rest this afternoon and that is going to involve reading and taking a nap with getting up at 5am today…we did get our guided tour to see Michelangelo’s David and the huge cathedral here that took 3 hours and took everything out of me…my right foot is pretty swollen and I need to put it up this afternoon…the tour was fun with out guide Klaus and he knew everything about the time that Michelangelo was doing the Pieta and David and I learned a lot about him…so that was cool…tomorrow we go to the Galileo museum and that will be cool…but right now I’m going to take a break for the day and just veg a bit…just frickin worn out…

Well…up and running at 5am this morning which has even become normal 6 hours earlier than in the US…and I think that’s pretty weird but I haven’t been anywhere to test that theory…had a good day yesterday with it being a travel day but still got a museum in with a lot of old masters that were painted from the 1200s to the 1500s…taking a tour of the huge old cathedral this morning but will be done about noon and then have the rest of the day to just explore…I just may spend 100 euros to find some leather goods that they say are an “investment” since they are not cheap but we’ll see…we’ll probably explore around here after lunch and I do want to see the 1000 year old covered bridge that I saw from the museum yesterday…I really do think this will be my last trip and I’m not sure how I feel about that…I am so ignorant about modernity in hotels that I didn’t know to put the room key in a slot inside the door to make the lights work and I am a little embarrassed abut that…oh, well…you can’t know everything when you don’t travel a lot…off we go to another day…more later…

Well….another busy travel day on our trip and we are in Florence today and have already done one museum tout and will have a tour of the cathedral tomorrow and the Galileo museum on Sunday morning…Florence is a frenetic city with action, action, action and even more people than Venice but add in cars on the packed streets and it is kind of surreal…nothing but Italian on the tv here so I’m using it to mask my tinnitus that has been really bad…and I am damn sore everywhere that I will have to treat with a lot of Ibuprofen to be able to get through it…the train ride was cool and so damn comfortable and I wonder why planes can’t have seats that good…our hotel is only a 15 minute walk from the train station and we’ll do that again when we leave for Rome Monday afternoon…I need rest…this 73 year old body may be getting some permanent damage…I tried to pay my daughter for my part of the trip but she said no and told me to have one of the new add on ac units installed for about 1300 bucks…they are 9-12,000 btu’s and cool the whole house along with heat it…we had one in our first hotel and it was pretty cool…so I just might…

Well…up and running at about 6am this morning to get ready for heading to the boat that we take to the train station at about 8:45 and I have the little induction pot going to make some instant coffee to get me moving…it’s been fun here in Venice and I was able to eat gelato/ice cream for the first time since I had the huge infection in my mouth that had me so sensitive to cold it was like getting hit in the face with a hammer it hurt so bad…we have one museum this afternoon and I’m not sure if it’s the Gallileo or DaVinci but I don’t care…it will be cool after seeing all the Picassos and Calder stuff yesterday…my body is holding up okay but with some pains that are pretty normal so I’ll live through it…I do have a blister on my right little toe that I have to put a bandage on but that was expected with all the fast walking we’re doing…my daughter really flies when she has somewhere to go…I did get a notice from consumers that the power was out at my house but it was for planned maint and only lasted about an hour so no big deal…so, I need to pour the coffee down and get a shower but need to get the first Mastodon post out first…more later…

Well…figured you’d be reading this at some point…we leave for Florence tomorrow and then Rome on Monday…Venice is a city with tiny little alleys that go everywhere and I’m almost figuring out where we are sometimes…J has been using the GPS on her phone to get us around…it’s been fun but we must have walked 25 miles since Monday…blisters on my feet but bandaids work for that…staying in the cool little hotel that is in a 200+ year old building…tiny rooms but I wanted old Italy and not a best western…lots of Italian language tv and even prime on my tablet is showing me Italian shows but that just makes me laugh…will give you a call when I get back on the 4th…just got a notice that my power is out from consumers…scheduled maint so no big deal…

Well…for our last day here in Venice, we had the best morning with a visit to the Guggenheim gallery that is housed in Peggy Guggenheim’s house she lived in when she was a resident in Venice…and yes she was rich…but she used her wealth to foster the talents of Picasso, Calder, Dali, and Mogdliani who were friends who she hosted at her houses all over the world and was instrumental to exposing them to the world…I have never seen so many Picassos in one place and one Calder mobile was still in the same place she had it when she lived there…in a front foyer where the wind from the doors opening would make it move…talked to one of the docents from London and she said that this collection was one of the best in the world of modern art and I couldn’t believe how many masterpieces were there…my jaw was dropping as I walked the galleries and saw artists I never thought I’d ever see…very cool…

Well…up and moving at 6:08 this morning on this last day here in Venice and I’m pretty worn out but I am making coffee here in my room to jump start this old body…did the Murano tour yesterday and it was okay but nothing special…kind of boring actually with going to two other islands that were not much and I was happy when we got back here for dinner…no tours or anything today but we are going to the Guggenheim museum that is only a 15 minute walk from here and it has Picassos, Dalis, Calders, and many other modern artists that are cool…they even have the famous DaVinci drawing of the man with his arms spread but we won’t see that since they only display that every 6 years for a few minutes so the conservators can look at it to make sure it’s not deteriorating…we’re heading for that around 10 after we have breakfast and coffee…it has been a good few days here in Venice and I am looking forward to traveling in our private train car to Florence tomorrow…going to look at some leather goods there since they have the best in the world…but first I’m going to make some coffee and get a couple of Mastodon posts out and read the news…more later…
