Thankfully, I was wrong…

Well….while I was over at J and K’s last night, we were talking about the prospect of even having an NHL season this year and I felt that there was not going to be one…thankfully, I was wrong. Woke up this morning to the news that the NHL and the players have reached an agreement and there will be a season starting in two weeks! It has been one of the things that has been a big hole in my life since the fall, not being able to watch the Wings on a cold wintry night with a cocktail and texting…so, let’s play!

Haven’t done a sports one in a while…

Well…I’m sitting here with an eagle eye on the roast that I’m cooking for the big meal of the day (don’t want it to get over 130 degrees) and thought that I’d say something about sports…wait, better go check to see if I’m missing anything from the BPL…okay, just re-runs so I’ll continue here. First, I am getting used to there not being any NHL this year and I think that may be a problem for the league if they continue this disastrous lock out much further….and, I blame the whole thing on the owners and their greed; thinking only of squeezing more and more money out of the players with no thought to the thousands of people who are the support network for the league and whose livelihood depends on the games being played. Shame on these rich assholes…just more of the same form these folks…the same types who have said they will hurt their employees just to avoid Obamacare…what a bunch of idiots. Hmmmm….oh, the Lions…I think we have another Barry Sanders thing going on with Megatron…the best player in the league being wasted on a team that looks like it has quit…losing 7 in a row? Fire the coach and GM and let’s get rebuilding again so maybe they will be good for the first time in my long lifetime….Hmmm…okay, Man U. What the heck is wrong with these guys? I know they are top of the chart over in the BPL but tying Sunderland? With Rooney, VanPersie, and Chicharito on the team? Another case of a team underperforming for the talent they have…it seems like that is a pattern for the teams I follow….maybe I should stop and they’ll get better? We’ll see tomorrow when Man U plays….

It’s all optics to the repubs…

Well…I found the article about ole Ryan’s visit to a soup kitchen yesterday so damn funny that I would laugh if it wasn’t so sick…the repubs using the poor as props as they always do and when the election is over they go back to destroying the programs that help them. If you didn’t read the article, ole Paul dropped in on a St. Vincent DePaul homeless kitchen unannounced and then, since there was no meal being served at the time, proceeded to go into the kitchen, put on an apron and pretend to wash dishes…dishes that were already cleaned but he made a huge show of “cleaning” them…what a pure ass this guy is..fake compassion is worse than no compassion…geez…

How about a little sports?

Well…I was going to come back and add to the one from earlier today but thought I’d do one on sports instead…there have been lots of games/races to comment on so I think I’ll start with the games. First, Manchester United finally looked a little like themselves today with a 3-0 win over Newcastle United…it’s about time they did something with the addition of Van Persie and it looks like RVP and Rooney are starting to mesh a little…it might make it fun to watch over the winter. Then, there was the Tigers game today…so very exciting when they went into the bottom of the ninth tied at 4-4 with Oakland and proceeded to load the bases with one out…and the very little used Don Kelley, who was hitting .186, came up and hit a sac fly to the outfield to win it 5-4…pretty cool. The last thing was the Talladega race that was on this aft….and the 20 car wreck on the last lap that had Tony Stewart upside down and bouncing on the top of a few other cars as the wreck unfolded. One of the coolest things about the wreck was the Tony didn’t make any excuses for his mistake…taking responsibility with no weasel words or qualifying…I wonder why no one else does that? Oh, well…just asking…

Should talk about the Olympics…

Well…it has been a day and I have grown weary of attacking ole Mitt, so I thought I talk about other stuff for a change…and, since I’ve been watching the Olympics almost non-stop since they started, it seems they would be a good topic. One of the things that has surprised me is the gaming of the games that have been going on, starting with the badminton scandal, I thought you were supposed to always try your best, not try to use the rules to avoid having to. But, that just what we got with some of the Chinese badminton players who clumsily tried to lose so they would get an easier opponent in the next round…I’m not sure they should be banned since the rules were there to be used but doesn’t anyone adhere to the spirit of the contest anymore? Then, there has been the atrocious refereeing and judging of boxing, leaving fighters who clearly won their fights the losers with it getting so bad that at least two of the results were overturned on appeal, something that is virtually unheard of. But, I still love the two weeks when the games are on..it gives me a chance to forget being broke and unemployed and root for the good old USA.

Just catching up…

Well…as you know, when it gets to the end of the month, I usually have to play catch up and this month is no different…I have been watching lots of olympics and I’m not sure I’m so happy with how NBC is is putting the games on…I really have to avoid watching any other sports channel since all of the prime time events take place during the day and they tape delay them but the results run across the bottom of the screen and it takes the suspense out of it for me…and, the inane interviews with the competitors and families can be discarded all together…but, I’ll keep watching…what else is there to do when you don’t have a lot of cash? I’ll come back to add to this one later….hey, where have you heard that before?

A little sports for a change…

Well…with the eve of the Olympics upon us…I am getting excited for them to start just like I have for my entire life so I thought I’d talk about them and some other sports instead of a political one for today…so, one of the things I really hate about nbc running the show this time is the fact that they have at least half of the events on channels that I don’t get; just like when they have hockey on their sports channel that I won’t even mention because I just hate their announcers…and they hate the Red Wings. It is pretty cool to root for the US again…with the olympics you don’t have to think who you’re for, it’s always the US…there is another hierarchy that I have in my head for when the US isn’t playing but it would take too long to explain here and it changes daily so even if I did explain it, it wouldn’t be valid tomorrow…

There are other sports, too, and I am looking forward to the sports car race that is at Indy at 4 today and the other two races that happen over the weekend and there are the Tigers, too, but Verlander looked like crap last night and I was really disappointed…but, they are still near first place so I shouldn’t complain too much…okay, that’s it…I’m going to go do something else…not sure what but something…

The first Red Wings update…

Well…I completely forgot that today was the first day of free agency for the NHL and I thought I’d do what is probably going to be a running set up updates as the signings happen…there were a couple of developments today…not the big blockbuster that would come from signing Suter or Parise, but a couple of players that might help did sign. We’re familiar with Sammy (Mikel Samuelsson) who played for us on the last Stanley Cup team….and Jordin Tootoo from Nashville….Tootoo could add a little grit and meanness to the team but I am concerned sometimes when an abrasive player is added to our finesse team…but, the league is heading in that direction so maybe we have to keep up. One signing that I’m not so sure of is is the Swedish goalie that played for Toronto last year…and they gave this guy 1.5 million for 2 years…why not give one of the prospects in GR a chance? That’s what they are there for, after all.

Oh, the goaltender we signed is named Gustavsson….still not sure that was a good idea…especially with a 2.98 GAA and a.900 save pct from last year…

Thanks Nick…..

Well…just finished watching the press conference where Nick Lidstrom announced his retirement and it is a sad day for those of us who love the Wings but even more than that, it is a sad day when the classiest person in hockey, or any sport really, leaves the game. Nick has been the one constant since I have avidly followed the Wings and this will diminish the fervor somewhat I’m afraid….one thing that is gone for me is the confidence that when an opposing player breaks away and comes down the ice, that Nick will handle it….there were many times, watching with my friends, that I said out loud when that happened, “we’ll be okay, Nick’s got it..” and now I can’t say it anymore and that is going to be hard….

So, I’ll leave it at this….thanks Nick….it is cool when someone adds more to the world than they take…we’ll all miss you…
