World cup wrapup…

Well…haven’t really thought about politics today so that will have to wait until tomorrow or Wednesday…right now, with the world cup ending yesterday, it’s time to put down a few thoughts about this cup…the thought just came to me that this is the 5th one that I have really followed and I think it is certainly my favorite…it might be that I had more knowledge of the teams and players since I follow the BPL and many of them play in that league, so it was cool to see some of them play for their countries…it was a little weird to see Tim Howard, or vanPersie not in their BPL colors but it was still fun to watch. I picked Germany to win it all and they did…and I was just thinking that I could have made some money if I would have bet on it but they were only about 5-1 so the money wouldn’t have been that good…I do feel good that the US only lost to Germany 1-0 and the favorites, Brazil, got bombed 7-1 by them…..but now, it is back to the boring days that were before the cup…oh, well….

World cup…again

Well…sitting here watching the last semi final and there is nothing going on in this game so I thought I’d talk about yesterday’s…I had the feeling that Brazil would lose, but I never thought it would be 7-1…but, Brazil was so overrated throughout the tournament that I thought a bad loss could be possible…after all, they tied Mexico in the group stage and Mexico could easily have won that game if they would have brought Chicharitto in earlier….I don’t feel bad for
Brazil either…especially since their fans were operating in a fog of over confidence for years and years….now, I guess I’ll go back to the match and update this later when it is over….

We’re through!

Well…one of the most remarkable things I have seen in quite a while just happened…the US is through to the round of 16 in the World Cup! This is something that no one in the world thought could even happen with the US being in the  “group of death” that had Germany and Portugal in it…and also included our nemesis, Ghana, who have put us out in the last two cups….I am so relieved but more than that…I’ve been a soccer geek for the past 20 years and have endured the ridicule that the US has gotten around the world and it makes me feel good that we can compete with the best of the world…even England and Spain went home in the group stage…now, it is going to be a long wait until the 5th when we play Belgium in the knockout round…but, I can bask a little for the gritty performances I’ve seen from our team…good job!

Disappointing…

Well…haven’t come up with anything to write about in politics so I guess I’ll do a little more sports…it was a disappointing day yesterday with the US tying Portugal when it looked like they were going to win until the last minute…so, that makes the chances of us getting through to the next round pretty slim…have to beat Germany Thursday, which is not going to happen, or tie them, which may happen, or lose to them and then let the math and tie breakers drive us nuts until the Ghana/Portugal match ends. Not going to be a good day Thursday but I guess we can look at it that we tried hard and looked better than expected….not sure if I’ll watch the rest of the matches but I’ve invested too much time to quit now….I just hope Brazil loses this aft and makes it interesting…more later…

World cup part two….

Well…it has been a  fun world cup so far and most of the matches have been good ones, no real blow outs but a bunch of surprises with Spain not going to make the round of 16 and the US having the possibility of getting through with today’s game. I am starting to get pretty excited about it but with Portugal losing it’s first match, I think they will come out much harder than they did against Germany.  if they do that, we could be in trouble….but, there are a couple of ways we can get in…tie today’s match and then tie Germany Friday…or, if we lose, we need to beat Germany and I just don’t see that happening. So, today’s match is going to be a nail biter but if we play like we can, we’ll have a chance…not sure if I can take the stress….

World Cup stuff…

Well…I almost forgot to come back to do this one with all of the soccer that has been on today…but that is the topic I wanted to talk about so that would be just too ironic…so far, the matches have been pretty good, especially the US 2-1 win over Ghana last night…one of the most hard- fought games I have seen in quite a while but the US can play so much better…but maybe not the next match with Altidore being injured and no one that I can see to replace him…that is one of the reasons I thought that leaving Donovan off the squad was a bad idea…he would have made a good backup for just this instance and Altidore has been injury prone throughout his career…I guess it will be left up to the no name forwards to break out…I hope they do…or maybe Dempsey?  The Mexico/Brazil game just finished a few minutes ago with a 0-0 tie and I’m not surprised…Brazil didn’t look that good in their first match…Mexico looked okay in their first but still not what they can play….I do need to get a life and stop doing nothing but watching soccer….maybe tomorrow….

Getting caught up…again…

Well…not sure how I got 4 behind for the month but I do know I need to get moving and get caught up…it has been a busy morning of running around and now I just want to stop and hang out for a while…I still don’t understand why Landon Donovan was left off the world cup team…I know he’s lost a step but he is still better than the guys that are going to replace him…I think Klinsmann is not the great manager that he is supposed to be…he’s had the team for over a year and where are the results? No better or even worse than the previous managers and I never know what team is going to show up and that is the manager’s fault….I don’t see us getting into the round of 16…or even winning a game next month….and I’m too old to wait for 4 more years for the next world cup….

A sports day…

Well…with this being a Sunday, it’s nice that it is a sports day, too…have already watched Man U lose and look bad doing it…and now the Tigers are on until the F1 race starts in a while, then the Wings are on at 3…might have to have a shot and a beer with that one but I don’t like to drink during the day so maybe that will be out…I am looking forward to the game and already have the gear on for it…but, there is no way we’re going out of Boston with a 2-0 lead….the split will be okay…just can’t get blasted out of the arena 6 to nothing…might be bad for the youngsters…but, then again they just let it roll of their backs like only youngsters can…and, if we can take this out to 7 games, Hank may even be back but if we’re playing well, who do we sit? Not going to be an easy choice that’s for sure…My only problem is what am I going to do after the game? Maybe take a drive with the top down….who knows?

Some sports?

Well…it has been a semi productive day today but if I add in all of the sports I have been trying to see, it gets much more so….just finished up watching Man U win one and take the three points and now am watching the Wings play a kind of lethargic game but they are still tied so I guess that is okay…and, after I finish this one, going to go back to basketball as my flashback channel…oh, and there is a race on in an hour and a half with Michigan starting about the same time…and State later…geez…my head is spinning with all of the work just trying to keep them all straight….so, I’m going to go back to the couch and just potato for a while…probably a long while but I do need to do 2 more of these today or maybe tomorrow?

Not much politics right now..

Well…have been working all day trying to find something to write about in politics, but I think I’ve covered most of the interesting ones this week…so, let’s talk about something else…how about some sports? Okay, let’s do that…I feel bad for the Wings with them losing Hank for the rest of the season with back surgery…but, he needed to get it done with the chunk of disc that broke off and stuck in the nerve…so now the youngsters have to really step up…might be interesting to watch…after the debacle of the US mens hockey team this morning, I can’t wait for the Wings to get back to playing…I will be rooting for the Swedes tomorrow morning to take the gold….boy, the new racing season has started out quite boring…the twin 150′s and the truck race were basically follow the leader all race…and the Nationwide race is just the same…might be a good time to take a nap…Man U did win this aft so that was cool…maybe I’ll just head back to the couch and watch the rest of the race…more later…not really…
