Women’s rights on the ballot….

Well…some good news today here in Michigan as the groups trying to enshrine women’s rights to control their own body in the Michigan constitution blew past the required 400K signatures on the petitions to almost double that….so it will be on the ballot this fall and I am pretty damn happy about that…and the article went on to say they had 60,000 volunteers sign up to gather the signatures necessary and no one has ever seen that before…and with these rights polling at over 70%, it is almost certain to pass…but you can be sure the repubs here are already scheming to nullify these rights so we also need to vote these corrupt assholes out and put the dems back in control of the house and senate along with re-electing Whitmer for governor…okay, the JWST photos are coming up…need to watch….

Let’s stop this nonsense…

Well…in case you haven’t heard, there is a new military spending bill wending it’s way through the congress that has a very troubling provision in it…in the guise of fighting terrorism, there are provisions in this bill that will essentially gut the constitution and make it no longer applicable to yours or my rights as citizens of the US. What this bill will allow the government to do is detain indefinitely, any US citizen, even caught on US soil who is even suspected of any connection with terror or terrorist support. The government would not have to present any proof that this person had committed any crime and the person held would have no recourse to challenge the detention…in direct contravention to the 4th amendment, and habeas corpus. This means that the president would have more power than King George the Third who we fought in the revolutionary war and could lock our citizens up in the equivalent of the Tower of London. The worst part of this is this is bi-partisan nonsense with even dems like Carl Levin of Michigan supporting this egregious destruction of our civil liberties. I need you folks to write to your legislators and Obama and tell them in no uncertain terms that you will not accept this destruction of what this country stands for…I have…geez….

Some new thoughts….

Well…wanted to get at this one before the day gets busy…it deals with a fear I have about how the news of bin Laden’s death will be exploited by the fear-based community (repubs and the security-military complex) to place further restrictions on American citizens and continue the undermining of the constitution and our individual rights. Now, I realize that bin Laden had pretty much been marginalized by the manhunt for him, left to communicate by human couriers to the world outside his complex, and that there were still terrorist attacks attributed to his metastitizing organization going on around the world; dangers that may or may not get worse with the killing. But, we already see the security-military complex taking advantage of the purported higher risk by asking for more money to increase police patrols and surveillance on the general public in the oft chance there may be reprisals. When is this going to stop? When are we, as a country going to say “enough” that we can take a little danger if it means that the government won’t be reading our e-mails, tapping our phones, and watching us with cameras everywhere we go. One of the things that the security organizations do not want you to know is the experience of England, where there is a camera on every corner and every move of their citizens is watched…with all of that watching, not one terrorist attack has been prevented by seeing the perpetrators ahead of time…at best, it may be a tool for hindsight but it is not preventative…and isn’t that what the increasing intrusion in our lives was sold as? I think the death of bin Laden should be the trigger for a real dialogue on what kind of society we want to be…a free one or the one of George Orwell from “1984″….we can’t be both….
