Deadbeats of a different sort…

Well…this little nugget just popped into my head and I thought I’d share it….this goes back to ole Mitt’s statement that “corporations are people, too, my friend” on the stump and highlights an unintended dig that Mitt had for those same corporations. When you look at the numbers, you’ll find that many, many corporations like GE did not pay any income taxes in the past few years….so does that make them part of the 47% that ole Mitt so callously derides? To me, this just points out the incoherence and ignorance that is the core of the repub candidate…I thought I’d seen the stupidist (I know that’s not a real word) candidate for president when I saw ole GW…but Mitt is in a class of his own and makes even Rick Perry look like a genius….bring on the debates…geez…

The wholly owned subsidiary of corporate America…

Well…not sure how long this one is going to be since I just started thinking about it about 10 seconds ago…so, let’s see where it goes and if it’s worthwhile. As you know, I have been an outspoken critic of the cozy relationship that the repubs have with business interests here in the US, at most times, looking like they are the governing arm of the corporations; giving them whatever they want in the guise of “job creation” and getting government “out of the way”….themes that they still parrot and push even with the financial meltdown that was largely caused by the deregulation of the industry by the repubs. I will say that the dems were complicit in this nonsense either by stupidity or political expediency and they share the blame…but let’s not let false equivilency muddy the waters here…by and large, it was the repubs doing. So, where is this going? Oh, I just read that businesses and billionaires are planning to try to buy this election with over 1 billion dollars of advertising attacking the dems and pushing the hard right agenda….I fear for our democracy if this nonsense is allowed to continue…and I fault the American people for listening to the nonsense and not doing their duty as Americans to find out the facts before they vote….geez…

The extortion continues…

Well…I was laughing my butt off a few minutes ago when I read an article in the Washington Post that covered the new round of extortion that is being foist on the public by many of the biggest corporations in the US. These shameless thieves are claiming that they are ready, willing, and able to create jobs if they just get some teensy little concessions in regulations…like being able to write the regulations that cover the oil and gas industry or the ability of the telecom industry to continue to consolidate until there is just one huge carrier that can then steal even more from the public. These thieves are even saying that when they merge, it will create jobs….never mind that the primary reasons for these mergers are higher profits by the reduction of redundancies….which, in corporatespeak means that jobs will be cut, not created. When are we, as a country, going to stop letting these greedy idiots steal everything? Geez….

Let’s forget this tax holiday nonsense…

Well…there is a little noticed but well-financed lobbying effort going on right now that is trying to get a free pass on taxes for companies that have stashed trillions of dollars of profits overseas to avoid paying federal taxes on them. These companies are pushing a reduction of tax rate from the normal 35% to only 5%…much less than any middle class individual pays on his earned income, to bring these profits back into the US. One of their big selling points for this tax cut is that they will use the money to create jobs; never mind that these companies are already sitting on over 2 trillion dollars in retained profits in the US that they are not spending to create jobs, so why would anyone expect them to spend any of this offshore profit? In fact, the last time a tax holiday was give to these same companies in 2004, they ended up cutting over 560,000 jobs but used the money to increase the pay of the top level managers of the companies while they were cutting these jobs. This is just another instance where corporations are manipulating the congress by buying votes and will end up lining their own pockets with this repatriated money….when does this nonsense stop?

Aren’t you tired of being held hostage?

Well…I have been thinking about this one ever since a new governor was elected here in Michigan and one of his first acts was to propose changing the business tax structure to give corporations a huge tax cut carried on the backs of the workers who will be forced to take pay and benefit cuts to pay for them….these cuts for business would worsen our deficit here by 100% and be another huge transfer of wealth from you and I to the rich…again. The reason for these changes, along with the repub bowing to business interests, are the threats by corporations to move out of the state if they don’t get what they paid for when they gave the money to elect repubs to take control of all of Michigan’s government. The same thing is happening in Illinois, when the legislature there voted to raise taxes (from 4.8 to 6 percent) to deal with one of the most severe budget crises that any state faces and businesses have started those same old tired threats….never mind that most corporations have many ways to avoid taxes that you and I don’t…these ungrateful thieves have started to pout and want to take their ball and go home. I say, good riddance….these guys want all of the rights of citizens (that they were granted in the Citizens United decision) but they want nothing to do with the responsibilities. When was the last time you were given free land to build a house or had your taxes eliminated to keep you living where you do? I’ve had enough of the competition to make our workers into third world laborers who can never make enough money to live a middle class life while corporations and their political lapdogs rake in all of the benefits of those labors.

We need to start a new movement where there is a price to pay for selfish corporate behavior…let’s find out who these creeps are and just stop buying from them…it’s been too long that corporations have been able to do whatever they want and hold the rest of us hostage to their whims….it will never stop unless we do….geez….

I don’t understand…

Well…was just sitting here thinking tonight..(yeah, I know, that’s dangerous) that I don’t really recognize what this country has become..or what it’s people have become over my lifetime….maybe it’s just a perspective thing on my part but I really do think we’ve lost our way. And, I think that some of the posts that I’ve written have added to the polarization that I think has taken away our Americanness and continues to be part of the wall that keeps us from finding our way back. That’s not to say that I’m going to stop writing about my particular way of looking at the world and venting my outrage…and won’t apologize about.

How have we allowed corporations to have so much power over our everyday lives? nope not feeling it right now…more later…okay…back now….

Corporations have the power to destroy our environment, to take away our jobs, to buy our elected officials, and run roughshod over American’s lives and the people that are getting screwed keep electing officials that help them do that. Have we become so stupid that we can’t even think in our own self interest?

This one is not as lucid that I envisioned when I started it…just not feeling as sharp as normal tonight….oh, well….
