Well…with the tragedy in Dallas last week, the usual suspects started spouting off that if more of the people in the protest were armed, they could have taken out the shooter and saved the lives of the 5 officers that were killed….the standard response from the 2nd amendment crazies who think it is a good idea to have guns, guns, and more guns everywhere. But, in response to that, I want them to listen to a quote from the Dallas police chief that came out today talking about “open carry”…”we don’t know who the good guy is vs who the bad guy is if everyone starts shooting…” Yep…the police think it’s nuts for everyone to be carrying guns all the time but does that matter to the NRA who is pushing for more and more open carry? And we all know why they want it…so the gun manufacturers that bankroll the NRA will make more money…not giving a damn that it puts more people in danger, that it puts the police in the unenviable position of having to make spit second decisions that can and will kill the idiots that are strutting around playing soldier….and, if you read history, the 2nd amendment was never meant to say that anyone could carry any gun anywhere…it was to protect the country since, at the time, there was no standing army and state militias were necessary for the people’s protection…they always forget the first part of the 2nd..”a well regulated militia…” not any yahoo with more money than brains…geez…

It’s the constitution again…
Well…the gun rights people are happy today after the Supreme court made it harder for states and cities to have their own restrictions on guns. Now, I’m a pretty liberal, progressive person but when it comes to the constitution, I sometimes have to side with the righties when they have an absolutist view of the rights that they hold dear. My big problem is that most people pick and choose the rights they want to defend having more than once heard these very same righties utter the phrase “if you don’t have anything to hide, you won’t mind having your home, car, or person searched” on the capricious authority of any police officer. You’ve heard me tell of the horror stories that come from this kind of power and of the gutting of what is the most important amendment in the bill of rights; the fourth.
So why can’t we agree that the entire constitution is important and needs defending by both the right and left? Where was the right when their darling boy GW made the biggest attack on the constitution and their rights in history? Geez…
Guns and protection of rights
Well…I don’t understand the sudden interest in personal rights by the gun toting folks at the rally that was held in Virginia earlier in the week. Where the heck were these guys when the Bushies were trampling on all of the Constitution, not just the Second amendment? Where were they when Habeas Corpus was being denied to even American Citizens? Where were they when the Fourth amendment was being gutted by the unlimited wiretaps without warrants that they foisted on the American people under the guise of fighting terrorism? Where were they when these lawbreakers were torturing in the name of the American people? I truly believe in the Second amendment but these guys should understand that the possibility of the government “coming for them” is much reduced in an administration that believes in the rule of law rather than the rule of Bush. Geez….
