Live David Bowie…

Well…to go on with the music topic from yesterday, I was looking for an album to listen to on the indoor bike this morning and came across a live David Bowie album that I didn’t even know I had so I put that on and played it…some songs that are on it I’ve never heard before and that was a little treat…oh, and with that listening, I can add another one to the Hammond B-3 count from the song “Panic in Detroit”…more later….

Another two for the B-3 count…

Well…after talking to T the other day and her question if I remembered the song “dragging the line” by Tommy James, I got sucked into youtube again looking at videos of music that I have in my playlists that I use on the bike every day…one of those is “Dark eyed Cajun woman” by the Doobie Brothers and I had never seen that they used a Hammond B-3 organ before so I am going to add them to the B-3 count. I also saw a commercial on tv with Elton John in it that covered his career from the start until now and, though I thought he just played piano, there is one shot of him playing a B-3 so I’ll add that to the B-3 count, too….

Add another one to the B-3 count…

Well…just sitting here watching PBS and the groups from the 60′s that they are showing and just saw something that made me laugh…the Young Rascals were on and lead singer was playing a Hammond B-3 and it looked brand new…and now the Beach Boys are on with the same thing…a brand new B-3…at least they looked brand new…not like the ones I see modern groups playing that look like they have lots of miles on them…so add another one to the B-3 count….

Another pair for the B-3 count…

Well…yeah, I know…it’s been a couple of days since I did a political one and it is going to be one more…there is a lot going on but my brain cleanse is not done yet so you’ll have to wait until tomorrow for one of those….right now, I want to do one on a topic that I haven’t done in quite a while…my obsession with the Hammond B-3 Organ and the groups that used them. Yesterday, while I was killing some time and trying to not use any data, I was going through my antenna channels and ran across some old bands on PBS and immediately my eyes looked to the stage and my ears perked up when Eric Burdon was on and his band had a B-3 and even had the Leslie speaker that is supposed to be used with it…right after that, Procul Harum came on and they too had a B-3…and if you remember their big hit “a whiter shade of pale”, you will remember the organ solo in the middle that is clearly a B-3…so, add a pair to the B-3 count…

Finally, another one for the B-3 count….

Well…haven’t done one in awhile about my obsession with the Hammond B-3 organ…I thought I’d seen and written about all of the groups that are important to me…and I had made the assumption that Ray Manzarek of the Doors never played one since I had never seen it in any of their concert films. But, today…while watching a documentary, there was Ray in the studio while they were recording “The Soft Parade” sitting at a B-3….so, add another one to the B-3 count….

Add another one to the B-3 count…

Well…sitting here watching a Santana show on AXS tv and what do I see? It’s a Hammond B-3 but it is not like any one I have seen before…it looks like a portable model…doesn’t look like furniture like a normal B-3 but looks like the B-3 double keyboard and stops but sits on a metal stand…it does have “Hammond” in huge letters on the front of it and sounds like a B-3 so I’ll add another one to the B-3 count….

Add another one to the B-3 count….

Well….just can’t get started this morning so I am reading and watching a little tv and I ran across a Bruce Springsteen concert on AXS…and guess what, there is a Hammond B-3 on the stage…and, I just realized a weird thing with it’s placement….most of the time, the B-3 is on the left hand side of the stage when you are facing it….not all of the time but 90%…strange….so, add another one to the B-3 count…
